Faculty Exchange Program

The NYU-Collège de France Initiative is a faculty mobility program that facilitates the exchange of lecturers between New York University and the Collège de France in Paris.

Through this partnership, NYU and the Collège will each host visits by up to three faculty members from the other institution.

Priority will be given to visiting scholar nominations that contribute to a balance of academic disciplines, scholarship, and programming opportunities each academic year.

Hosting Collège de France Faculty Members at NYU

NYU faculty members interested in hosting a Collège de France faculty member may submit a nomination through the Collège de France Visiting Scholar Nomination Form or by email to gias@nyu.edu.

Prospective faculty sponsors should review the financial and logistic terms outlined below and obtain their department’s agreement to support the potential visitor as needed before submitting a nomination. Prospective sponsors are also encouraged to obtain in advance the in-principle agreement of the Collège de France faculty member in question. Collège de France faculty members (chaires statutaires) can be found on this page.

Visits are typically expected to last one week. Considerations for longer stays will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

All expressions of interest should be received by January 15, 2025, for proposed visits that would take place during the following 2025-2026 academic year.

Financial and Logistic Terms

With the support of the NYU Office of the Provost, the NYU Global Institute for Advanced Study works in collaboration with NYU Departments, Centers, and Schools to bring Collège de France faculty members to NYU’s Washington Square campus.

This primarily involves the following three organizations and logistical commitments:

The NYU Global Institute for Advanced Study

  • Coordinates with the NYU Office of the Provost to provide up to $6,500 per visitor to support associated event costs and travel. These expenses include:
    • Accommodations, per diem, and miscellaneous travel (e.g., airport transfers, visa fees), up to $3,600
    • Event costs (e.g., lecture, reception, and faculty dinner), up to $2,900
  • Provides limited logistic and administrative support, including drafting and extending the invitation letter to the visiting scholar (with support from the sponsoring faculty member and departmental chair); arranging accommodations, and overseeing travel reimbursements.
  • Secures each visiting Collège de France faculty member a Visiting Scholar appointment and coordinates with NYU’s Office of Global Services to provide visa sponsorship.
  • Assists the hosting department with publicizing events.

The Faculty Host/Hosting Department or Center

  • Secures the support of the chair of the hosting department or center.
  • Secures a suitable office space for use by the visitor while on campus.
  • Organizes one or two public events, in collaboration with the Visiting Scholar and hosting department or center.
  • Takes the lead in publicizing lectures in advance of the scholar’s visit.
  • Organizes a faculty dinner and other appropriate occasions (e.g., workshop attendance, seminar, office hours, etc.) where faculty and students might meet and interact with the Visiting Scholar.
  • Secures the balance of the needed funding, if the total costs exceed $6,500.

    The Collège de France

  • Provides roundtrip airfare for scholars visiting New York.
